Mold- Making Procedure

Materials needed:

Flat working surface

Plastic sheet to tape and cover work surface

2 feet of 4 ply 9" wide cheese cloth (Standard width)

Paper and pencil for training tape measure for tracing feet

Good quality paste wax

1 quart or 1/2 gallon Kit SWD 889 Flexible self-skinning polyurethane

Good quality paste wax

4 Small paper cups

4 Tongue depressors or small paint mixing sticks

2 one inch paint brushes with brushes cut to one inch in lenght

1 14 " square piece of level board (wrapped in plastic)

1 pair latex gloves

1 safety glasses

Scotch tape

HOW TO MAKE THE INSERT

1) read the directions carefully before beginning procedure.

2) Prepare a clean working area by covering a table or other flat surface with plastic sheet.

3) Draw your foot outline on a sheet of paper adding an additional 1/2 inch around entire perimeter of the foot. Add an additional 1/4 inch at the heel and another half inch at the arch. Taper the sketch lines to gradually converge with the other lines for your footprint.

4) Cut out the drawing and mark one side "Right Foot" and the other side "Left Foot"

5) Tape down the corners of one end of a 24 inch length of a Saran Wrap type sheet to the flat work surface and leave remaining wrap extended.

6) Place foot print drawing in the center of taped down half of Saran Wrap type material

7) Cut 16" long piece of cheesecloth and place over footprint pattern

8) Note: This is when you should be wearing your safety glasses and latex gloves as the product mixes and expands quickly. Keep product away from your eyes.

9) Measure and pour 40 grams (4/5 ounce) of SWD 889 A side into small paper cup,

10) Measure and pour 80 grams (1 3/5 ounces) of SWD 889 B side into a second small paper cup.

11) Combine A Side into B side and mix for 12 seconds watching the second hands on the clock. Apply more of the mix onto the arch and heel areas

12) Quickly pour the mixed components in 30 seconds, evenly down the center of the cheesecloth, no closer than 2 inches from any edge.

13) Pull the remainder of the extended Saran-like material back over the poured material and tape it over and around the other end of cheesecloth foot print.

14) Carefully place the plastic covered board (plastic down) on top of the poured area. Be sure the board is centered as close as possible on top of the footprint pattern inside the urethane covered cheesecloth.

15) Gently press on the board to force the urethane mix to spread throughout the cheese cloth. Do not over push and accidently push the urethane mix from under the wood. Hold the position 30 seconds

16) Monitor the residual mix in the mixing cup to determine when it becomes tack free (not sticky) in the cup and under the wood as well. It will no longer adhere to the touch.

17) Remove the tape attaching the Saran Wrap type product so the plastic covered board can be moved away from but remain attached to the wrap.

18) Place a paper foot template over the product saturated cheesecloth and draw an outline with a magic marker around the paper foot template onto the shoe insert template.

19) Note the product is still soft, moldable and expanding while you work with it.

20) Carefully hold the shoe insert template so as not to cause any indentations and gently cut around the shape marked by the magic marker to become the shoe insert.

21) Place the new insert flat on the work surface and generously wax the edges only as you carefully turn it around without leaving any indentations.

22) The insert will still be warm and curing at app. 4 minutes.

23) Carefully slide the shoe insert with plastic still on it, into the shoe in such a manner that the insole and heel portions are higher up the side of the shoe than the rest of the shoe insert. Note: Be sure the remainder of the shoe insert is centered in the shoe.

24) Place talcum pwder on your sock, and inside your shoe to allow your foot to slide into the shoe with minimal resistance.

25) Slide your foot into the shoe, but do not stand down in the shoe for about 30 minutes and leave your shoes untied or loosely tied. Give your shoe time to adjust to your foot and create the desired cushion comfort areas under your foot

26) This will allow your insert to further compress in some areas and expand slightly in others to create a perfect custom fit for your foot and your shoe.

27) Remove the insert after 30 minutes and trim any overextended edges if necessary for best fit and shape.

28) Replace the shoe insert into the shoe and allow the product to completely cure for 24 hours then remove plastic before wearing your new custom fit ortho insert.

29) Flip your original template to make the other foot template and repeat the process for another custom fit comfortable foot and shoe insert.
